Edinburgh offers some of the most breathtaking and natural beauty in Scotland. Edinburgh Castle, for example, is a must-visit for residents and their friends and family. The most famous of Scottish castles is home to the Honours (Crown Jewels) of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, the famous 15th-century gun Mons Meg, the One o’Clock Gun, and the National War Museum of Scotland. This fantastic attraction is in an entirely accessible location and is available to everyone, no matter age, physical ability or interests. The castle arranges for a courtesy vehicle that is able to take visitors to the top of the castle. Ramps and a lift give access to the Crown Jewels, Stone of Destiny, and associated exhibition, and ramps provide access to the war memorial. For those with impaired vision, there is a free Braille guide and hands-on models of the Crown Jewels with Braille texts.

For visiting loved ones who enjoy the great outdoors and slow-paced walks, there is an abundance of options to choose from. The Water of Leith walk offers a tranquil riverside setting where wildlife is revealed by sight and sound, whereas Arthur’s Seat provides spectacular views of Edinburgh’s Skyline. Slightly further afield, but equally boasting beautiful views is Cramond Beach. Accessible by car, this small sandy beach is a popular choice with all Edinburgh locals as well as tourists who head here to walk and cycle on the scenic beachside paths. Another popular spot is Princes Street Gardens; impressive all year round, it is where many locals meet up, especially at the Ross Fountain, the park’s most important monument. In addition, the park is transformed every Christmas, as it turns into a “Winter Wonderland” with a Christmas Market, an ice rink, and many other fun attractions, including a Ferris wheel which is perfect for those who wish to enjoy the spirit of the season, with or without children.

One of our particularly favourite locations and a popular spot amongst our residents is the Royal Botanic Gardens. Located just one mile from the city centre, and a short drive from Struan Lodge Care Home, the Gardens offer visitors peace and tranquillity amongst 72 acres of stunning scenery. A pleasure for all the family, the Gardens encapsulate fantastic views of the capital’s skyline, with a special feature of Edinburgh Castle. Another family favourite is the National Museum of Scotland, which takes visitors on a journey of discovery through the history of Scotland, the wonders of nature, art and design, science and technology, and world cultures. Whatever interests our residents and their loved ones have, Edinburgh truly offers something for everyone.
