Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy, which involves the use of essential oils and massage, can help relieve the symptoms of old age. Varied essential oil mixes have different benefits, with nearly all of them having antiviral and antibacterial qualities.

Small studies have shown that people with Alzheimer’s or Dementia have also been able to find some benefits from aromatherapy, by increasing sleep time and reducing agitation, excessive movement, and wandering. Its gentle, holistic properties make Aromatherapy an ideal therapy to adopt in our home.

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils made from natural plant, tree, herb and flower extracts. Typically, the oils are absorbed through the skin by massaging a cream or lotion or by smelling or breathing them in, either through oil burners or applying the scent to a bath or a pillow. It’s been introduced into residential care homes in recent years to help people with long-term ailments such as arthritis, stress, circulatory and respiratory issues.

Benefits of ‘Wonder Oils’

When adopting a person-centred approach to therapy, an aromatherapist will be able to recommend specific oils to complement each resident’s ongoing treatments. The recorded benefits of aromatherapy are vast, with each essential oil providing unique and versatile properties. From alleviating sinuses, flu, and cold symptoms through to enhancing memory performance and improving overall mood. ‘Wonder Oils’ is commonly used to describe this holistic therapy due to the wide varying benefits that come from regular Aromatherapy practice.
